Screenability NSW is an umbrella program of activities that will deliver on an open-ended policy commitment by Screen NSW to work with industry to grow participation in the screen sector by people with disabilities.

The Screenability NSW Internship Program is a training and paid internship program for people with a disability, who are seeking employment in the film and television industry. The Program features training followed by internships on some of Australia’s most-watched “event” TV shows and highly-anticipated feature films, working with Australia’s leading production companies, broadcasters and streaming services.

The program will create opportunities for people in the technical and creative areas of screen production, including set building, art dept, camera and sound depts, make up and wardrobe, along with writing, producing, admin and production roles, plus editing, sound design, VFX, composing and many more. There will also be opportunities in the programming, scheduling and commissioning departments of partners including Foxtel, Stan and iView.

Prior to starting their internship, each of the eight individuals matched with a production will be provided with bespoke training through the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, developed in consultation with Bus Stop Films.

Internships, attachments and industry placements for emerging practitioners are well-established pathways to employment in the screen sector and we consider this program a critical first step towards working with the NSW government and the screen industry to deliver longer term job placements in the screen production sector.

Applications will open for internships at 12 noon on Monday September 19 and close at 5pm on Friday October 21.

Who is eligible to apply?

Any NSW based person with a disability, over the age of 18, who has been actively engaged in or seeking a career opportunity in production (behind the camera) in the film and television industry.

By disability, we refer to the Social Model of Disability, using the term ‘disability’ to refer to barriers, rather than medical conditions or impairments. These barriers are seen as being the disabling factors, which prevent or limit opportunities.

Eligibility in this case covers people with sensory or physical impairments (including deaf people), hidden impairments, intellectual impairments, learning difficulties or mental health conditions who face barriers accessing opportunities in the screen industry.

How do I apply?

While we encourage the submission of applications using our online application form, applicants to this program are welcome to submit their proposals in any accessible format, for example by email, audio file, video, handwritten or printed document. If you choose to submit a video application, it need not be a fancy or professionally edited clip, it can be as simple as one shot on an Iphone.

We do ask all applicants to provide the following information:

  • Description of disability or should you choose not to disclose: support or access needs.
  • Outline their experience as it relates to the film and television industry;
  • A summary of what training and employment they have been involved in; and
  • What they expect to get out of the experience.

When will the course be run?

It is anticipated that the course will be held in late 2016 or early 2017 - final dates TBC.

I have access needs – will there be assistance for me on the course and the internship?

Yes. All successful applicants will be provided with assistance on the course and during their internship, matched to their individual access needs.

When will the internships be run?

The internship commencement dates will be determined by the production schedule and the availability of the participant.

How long will each internship be?

The internships will vary according to the production schedule of the project, they may be 2 weeks, or up to 4-6 weeks long.

Can I choose which production company or show I intern with?

Screen NSW will liaise with each course participant to identify the best match from the pool of internships available.

Will I be paid while I am participating in the course and/or the internship?

 Candidates will not be paid during the course component, however they will be paid a wage during internships.
