Millie Bird is a seven-year-old girl who carries a book of dead things. She's added her dog and other random creatures but never expected her dad would become dead thing number 28. When Millie is deserted by her mother in the Ginormous Women’s underwear rack in a department store, life takes a strange turn.

Agatha Pantha is an eighty-two-year-old recluse. She hasn’t left her house since her husband died ten years ago. For the most part her house is silent, so she fills it by yelling at passers-by, watching loud static on TV, and yelling at her reflection in the mirror. Her life is turned upside-down the day she spies a little girl across the street looking for her mother. Agatha knows the little girl’s mother has deserted her and in spite of herself she finds herself wanting to help.

Karl the Touch Typist is a charming eighty-seven-year-old man who once typed love letters with his fingers onto his wife’s skin. He's been abandoned by his ungrateful son in a nursing home. He refuses to believe this is now his life. Heading to the local department store, he's looking for adventure.

Millie, Agatha and Karl’s lives become intertwined and the three will discover what it is to feel alive again, that they have yearnings, a voice and a place in society. For the first time in a long time, they are breaking the rules and living large.
