Location Scouting and Management Course

Are you an early or mid-career film and TV practitioner? 

Do you have an interest in photography, a knowledge of locations, landscapes and architectural styles – and excellent people management and research skills? 


Specifically aimed at those seeking a career as a Location Scout and Location Manager, this 4-day workshop over two consecutive weekends, will give participants a rare insight into what this key production role entails. 

Delivered by highly experienced film and television professionals, by the end of this course you will understand the processes of location scouting and location management from start to finish, from visualising the story, to securing the locations.  Including, what is the difference between a valuable location photo vs a ‘normal’ photo?  Who determines the creative and logistical requirements you need to consider when scouting? What is the fundamental role of the scout/location manager in interpreting a brief? Where do you start? And importantly,  what is the location scout’s and location manager’s relationship with the producer, director, and production designer, and other heads of department, across the different formats - TVC, TV Drama and Features? 

Practice Your New Skills and Get Professional Feedback 

The workshop includes practical tasks, where the participants get to put into practice the skills they’ve learned and present their work for professional feedback. It’s also a rare opportunity to meet some of the most experienced and skilled location professionals in the business. 

Applications will be assessed against a common set of criteria:

• A demonstrated commitment to pursuing a long term career in the film and TV industry;

• A strong interest in becoming a location scout or location manager;

• Relevant experience; and

• support material.

Luke Torrevillas from Ecomlocations will lead the workshop, with a number of guest speakers.   

Luke has worked in the Film and Television Industry for over 25 years in a variety of functions, including location scouting and management, producing, and international production facilitation. He brings a wealth of experience having worked on a multitude of productions that include music clips, TV commercials, television series including The Secret River, Cleverman, Jack Irish, and feature films including Extraction that filmed in India. 


Mary Barltrop is a Location Manager with over 25 years experience in film & TV, and is a member of the LMGI (Location Managers Guild International). Her work has taken her across the UK, France, Cyprus, India, Thailand, Australia & New Zealand, working for various companies including Netflix, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, ABC, BBC, SBS, and Channels 7 + 9 + 10. She was also once a dresser for the Chippendales. 

Matt Carroll, Senior Manager Screen Destination Attraction, Screen NSW

Matt has been one of Australia’s leading producers for over 30 years. During that time Matt has produced or executive produced 16 feature films, 7 TV movies, 7 mini-series, 6 documentaries and over 500 hours of TV drama. Apart from the creative, management and financial skills required to execute such a large body of work he has broad experience of working in and managing companies involved in this work.

As a successful and recognised art director and production designer in film and television for over 20 years, Igor Nay has established expertise and practical application in Screen Design and Art Direction that is informed by a body of work, extremely varied in scale, scope, style and theme.

During this time Igor’s designs have addressed the needs of the film, television, television commercial industries and internet video content providers.

Lisa Scope has worked as a locations Manager for 25 years. Her latest productions include Thor Love and Thunder,Peter Rabbit 2 and I am Woman
