Filmmakers get on board! The team at Sydney Trains has recently announced that the iconic electric train, the Red Rattler, is now available to productions for filming for the first time! Every filmmaker knows that locations have the potential to bring a unique quality to their film, and the Red Rattler will see your production on the right track.
Part of Sydney’s history, the Red Rattler Trains were once the city’s primary public suburban transportation car, operating between the 1920s to 1990s. The trains are conveniently located at Flemington Maintenance Centre in Sydney, with up to four carriages available for use. The trains that can even run on our Sydney tracks have been restored to full operating condition by Historic Electric Traction Society and Transport Heritage NSW.
The Screen NSW Production Attraction team has also included the Red Rattler Trains on the list of Sydney filming locations for productions to consider. You can view images here.
Fast facts about this iconic train:
- The passenger, single-deck vintage electric Red Rattler Trains operated in Sydney, Melbourne, and even New York!
- Officially known as the Set F1, the trains are affectionately known by locals as the Red Rattlers due to their red brick colour and the ‘rattle’ sound in their window frames.
- F1 includes one of the original carriages that formed part of the first electric train to cross the Harbour Bridge in 1932.
